The six assessment areas: what each one actually asks of you

Guided days are evaluated in six named areas: risk management, client care, technical systems, terrain assessment, movement skills, and professionalism. Each covers a different slice of the same day, so a single decision is judged from several directions at once.

Terrain assessment and risk management are easy to blur, so separate them deliberately. Terrain assessment is your reading of the ground itself: where the angle steepens, where a rock band forces a transition, where a crevassed section changes your rope format. Risk management is your response to hazards across the whole day: your hazard list, your margins, and the decisions you make before and after you commit to a line. Client care and professionalism likewise overlap in surface behavior but differ in substance. Client care covers orientation, communication, pacing, and how the client experiences decisions; professionalism covers how you represent the role itself, including conduct and honesty in debriefs. The published rules reward deliberate bookkeeping. Section descriptions typically allow a single route to be listed only once, though some explicitly permit a route from one section to be reused in another, such as snow and glacier climbs from one list counting toward a steeper-snow list. Shared-lead routes require that you led fifty percent or more of the route. Night-before route assignments: planning the objective you may not climb

On the Alpine Guide Exam, route assignments and client profiles are usually given the evening before. You are responsible for researching the assigned route and for alternative routes if the original objective proves infeasible.

Worked scenario: your assigned objective is a rock-dominant alpine route, and overnight weather leaves verglas in the approach gullies. The weak plan is to start up the original line, discover the gullies are untenable, and improvise a retreat or an unconsidered variation. The stronger plan, prepared the night before, already names an alternative objective with its own hazard picture, a turnaround trigger for each option, and the rope format you would use on each. You brief the client on the change, switch from pitching to short-roping terrain as the ground allows, and proceed.

This matters because the exam evaluates guiding decisions, not summits: terrain assessment and risk management are scored areas, and the program page explicitly frames the exam around route planning, client orientation, risk management, and normal guiding practices. A candidate who pivots early to a pre-researched alternative demonstrates the assessed skill; one who commits first and re-plans in the field demonstrates the opposite, even on a day that ends well.

A useful milestone is two consecutive mock-guided days where every decision can be justified aloud under questioning, and where the weakest of your six self-scores is at least a two. If a score drops, drill that single area on the next outing rather than repeating a full day.

An adaptable preparation sequence with readiness checks

Sequence your preparation as resume audit, avalanche training progression, entry coursework, volume of guided and mock-guided days with decision logs, then the Advanced course and Exam. Adapt timing to your own existing log and conditions.

Phase one is the resume ledger from section three, audited against the published requirements for your chosen pathway.
