Terrain hypotheses: predicting ground before you commit to it

Practice separating them deliberately. Take one forecast day and write two columns: from the rating, note which elevation bands and consequences concern you; from the problem, note aspect, expected distribution, trigger type, and how the problem evolves through the day. A lower rating paired with a persistent slab problem still rules out certain features, because persistent slabs tolerate little disturbance and respond unpredictably. A higher rating driven only by fresh storm snow may improve quickly with time. The pairing, not either number alone, generates terrain choices.

Worked scenario: Considerable danger above treeline with a wind-slab problem on north and east aspects, and buried weak layers deeper in the pack. The weak call treats 'Considerable' as a blanket ban and abandons reasonable objectives, or — after a calm, pleasant morning — treats the weather as evidence the rating was wrong. The stronger call reads the problem: wind-loaded and cross-loaded features at one elevation band carry the day's consequence, while sheltered, low-angle, non-connected terrain remains workable with spacing and one-at-a-time travel through identified pockets. Same rating, same day, completely different tour — which is why the problem statement drives the route.

Build a scenario log with a scoring rubric you can trust

Run each study session as one paper scenario plus a written decision list, then score yourself against a fixed rubric. The rubric should test process — named decision points, stated hypotheses, reversibility — not whether your final pick matched an answer key.
